May 26, 2026 — Seattle, WA — The Seattle Storm recently celebrated its first Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Night as part of the team’s “Storm Surge Games,” a series of “themed events designed to spotlight local leaders, creators, and change makers while honoring the culture, history, and contributions of the communities they represent.”

From the moment fans entered Climate Pledge Arena, they were immersed in a vibrant display of brightly colored flowers featured on the arena’s massive digital screens and above center court.

A special graphic featuring the Space Needle surrounded by jasmine, hibiscus, queen of the night, cherry blossoms, and lotus flowers was created by Ali Mahoney, a graphic designer for the Seattle Storm.
Each flower symbolized the diverse Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities and cultures represented throughout Seattle, including Mahoney’s own Filipino heritage.

Mahoney’s design was featured on T-shirts, hats, and stickers sold in the team store, where fans eagerly purchased commemorative merchandise throughout the evening.
Head Coach Sonia Raman was honored in a tribute video that played prior to tip off. Raman is the first Indian to coach in the WNBA
The Storm also welcomed several community guests and vendors to participate in the celebration, including the wāhine of Keʻala ʻO Kamailelauliʻiliʻi, who performed a traditional hula dance during halftime. The performance honored the story of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes, and her sister Nāmakaokahaʻi, goddess of the ocean.

Founded in 1996, Keʻala ʻO Kamailelauliʻiliʻi promotes awareness of Native Hawaiian language and culture through song and dance. The foundation invites community members to learn about Hawaiian culture and collaborates with local schools for educational resources. Besides hula, the organization teaches music and chanting.
